It is because when you say "mental problem"...it conjures up all sorts of images that typically make us think you think you've gone whacko.
But, I for one... understand what you mean...when your're feeling something... that consumes you....it is debilitating....

For some reason people who tell that they have that don't sound debilitated enough.
Too abstract, no proof of it, so people just decrease the weight of that statement in their mind.
